  • Thread icons

    Thread icons contain a handful of icons that can be used in the forum to signal about the intent of the post.
    So far about half of them are smiles, which don't bring a lot of meaning when used.

    I wonder if the set of icons can be strategically formed by the forum administrators so as to carry more meaning.
    I believe there is a standard mod for this purpose:
    https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/m...s_enhancement/

    Perhaps the following categories:
    • bug report or strange behavior report;
    • feature request;
    • compatibility question (versions, platforms, reproducibility, etc);
    • new command announcement;
    • question on a particular (well-known) dataset;
    • algorithm/method question;
    • data manipulation question (all sort of transformations, generation, etc);
    • estimation/analysis question;
    • graphics and reporting question;
    • beginner's "don't know where to start from" question;
    • particular command problem (of interest to mostly people using this command and the author);
    • ... suggest other categories ...
    Thank you, Sergiy Radyakin

    Sergiy: I don't want to stop anyone decorating their posts to taste -- although I personally only use smileys when other people go overboard with them.

    But my guess is that your chance of getting people to adopt -- or to recognise -- a complicated scheme is minimal. I need to look this up before I post? If someone uses one of these, I am supposed to check what they mean? Seems a lot easier just to read the post.
